Education and Training
CDI and Coder
We offer classroom, hands-on, and online training to strengthen and enhance the skills of inpatient coders and clinical documentation specialists. We strive to provide the essential information that is needed on a daily basis; cutting through the noise and helping you feel confident and capable.
Conducted by a physician and certified HIM and coding specialist, we lead introductory and advanced sessions on CDI, coding, and DRGs and use our own CDI Pocket Guide as the primary teaching manual. This effective and efficient guide is updated yearly and includes key coding rules and guidelines for correct and compliant coding, evidence-based clinical criteria for the key diagnoses that are often missed, and best practice for achieving effective and compliant physician queries. We also include representative case studies throughout the sessions and provide participants first-hand experience in applying the knowledge gained through the seminars.
For an onsite, hands-on training experience, we provide on-unit and in-department mentoring of CDI specialists and coding staff so they can apply learned concepts and tools and enforce processes for inhouse and discharged accounts.
Medical Staff and Physician Advisor
For more in-depth training, we offer onsite, physician-led medical staff education and also in-depth webinars, which can be conducted remotely.
Our physician executive, Dr. Richard Pinson, is uniquely effective in influencing physician colleagues. His presentations relay the importance of clinical documentation and the pertinent clinical criteria for key documentation, which is consistent with our coder and CDS education.
For a new or existing program, we suggest approximately three days of onsite medical staff education.
Our typical physician training comprises:
- The impact of documentation and coding on hospitals and physicians
- Risk adjustment methodologies and pay for performance programs
- Requirements for compliant, effective query construction
- Evidence based clinical criteria and standards, focused on documentation strategies which impact MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs and CMS claim-based pay for performance measures.
- Mentoring to apply learned concepts to record reviews
- Mentoring on the delivery of education to the medical staff
